Created in the wake of the behemoths of European diamond certification, the GIA takes its inspiration from these institutes. It is active in several fields: research, education and communication.

Research:

With the aim of advancing gemmology, the GIA research department is working on the development of methods and technologies for the precise identification of gemstone characteristics, and the synthetic and commercial classification of diamonds. Other research focuses on the development of detection techniques for treated gemstones.

Academic education: GIA offers a wide range of physical and online courses. The academic institute is present on 12 campuses around the world and online, where distance learning courses are available. A diploma called the Graduate Gemologist is the guarantee of a complete gemmologist's training in diamonds and colored gemstones. Another jeweler's diploma enables students to work in the field of gem marketing. The main campus in Carlsbad, California, offers training in the art of jewelry-making, including techniques and methods of jewelry design, wax cutting, mold making, fabrication, repair and stone setting. Upon completion of gemmological training courses and programs, you can become a certified jeweler, certified gemologist, diamond expert, gem expert, pearl expert, accredited jewelry professional, jewelry design and technology professional.
