GIA's foundation and mission

In 1931, Robert M. Shipley, an American jeweler and teacher, founded the GIA. After running several jewelry stores in Wichita, Kansas, in the United States, he moved to Great Britain, where he specialized and deepened his knowledge of gemmology with the National Goldsmiths Association.

The GIA's primary mission is to protect the gemstone industry (buyers and sellers) by establishing standards for assessing the quality and integrity of gemstones, while ensuring a high level of public confidence in gems and jewelry. To fulfill this mission, it has set up academies, analysis and instrument development laboratories in some fifteen cities around the world. To date, GIA employs some 1,000 individuals, including fastidious scientists, gifted and experienced gemstone workers and graders, educators and more. With its many innovations in the field of gemmology, GIA has established itself as a key player in the sector, a benchmark, all thanks to its expertise and integrity.

History of GIA

The history of GIA is closely linked to that of its founder Robert M. Shipley. In the 1920s, while the world was plunged into the Great Depression, a typical jeweler, lacking in jewelry knowledge, set out to improve the climate of confidence in the gemstone business. After several business failures and a broken marriage, he divorced his wife, gave up everything and went to Europe. There, he met Beatrice, his future wife, who introduced him to people and got him a job teaching in a museum. Settled in Paris and still as passionate about gems as ever, he began to take correspondence courses in gemology at the National Association of Goldsmiths in Great Britain. Having acquired a solid grounding, he returned to Los Angeles in 1930 and began sharing his knowledge by teaching jewelers at the Los Angeles Gemological Institute, which he had founded. He joined forces with a number of them to set up a national guild of gem experts. In 1931, he opened the GIA's first diamond analysis laboratory. From then on, the profession of jeweler was formalized, gemology legitimately became a recognized science, and gemological certification was established. Over the years, the GIA has made a major contribution to the development of the sector through the manufacture of the aplanatic magnifying lens, the gemological microscope and numerous other devices and systems for analyzing the qualities and integrity of a diamond.

GIA responsibilities

Created in the wake of the behemoths of European diamond certification, the GIA takes its inspiration from these institutes. It is active in several fields: research, education and communication.

Research:

With the aim of advancing gemmology, the GIA research department is working on the development of methods and technologies for the precise identification of gemstone characteristics, and the synthetic and commercial classification of diamonds. Other research focuses on the development of detection techniques for treated gemstones.

Academic education: GIA offers a wide range of physical and online courses. The academic institute is present on 12 campuses around the world and online, where distance learning courses are available. A diploma called the Graduate Gemologist is the guarantee of a complete gemmologist's training in diamonds and colored gemstones. Another jeweler's diploma enables students to work in the field of gem marketing. The main campus in Carlsbad, California, offers training in the art of jewelry-making, including techniques and methods of jewelry design, wax cutting, mold making, fabrication, repair and stone setting. Upon completion of gemmological training courses and programs, you can become a certified jeweler, certified gemologist, diamond expert, gem expert, pearl expert, accredited jewelry professional, jewelry design and technology professional.

The library records all work on gemstones from the 1400s to the present day. Documents cover natural and synthetic gemstones, their processing, jewelry design, manufacturing and marketing. Carlsbad, California, the birthplace of the GIA, is home to this important library and gemstone information center. It is open to all, and a panel of gemologists, who can be contacted by e-mail or telephone, is ready to provide answers to the public's questions.

GIA certification

The GIA is internationally recognized by professionals in the field as the most trusted authority in the valuation and certification of diamonds and precious stones. GIA laboratories issue a certificate of authenticity for stones, which is valid and admissible by insurance companies. This certificate testifies to the expertise and rigor of the GIA laboratories.

Diamond appraisal criteria: the 4C rule
